Crossroads Charter High School is in Title I School Improvement for the 2007 – 2008 school year. Though Crossroads boasts of maintaining one of the safest and most orderly school environments in the state, we struggle to elevate End of Course test schools due to the large number of students who enroll each year having performed poorly in their home schools.

Crossroads will provide self-paced individualized computer assisted instruction, which is available after school for students.  This is a supervised experience, as students will be able to work on teacher identified assignments at their own pace and in a style that will suit their needs.

All but one of our core teachers, those who teach English, Science, Mathematics and History, are certified by the state. The one teacher without certification has a bachelors degree in the areas she teaches.

Core teachers began the school year engaged in inservice whereby they focused on developing pacing guides for instruction. Pacing guides provide sequencing for instruction, a timeline, and one hundred percent alignment to the North Carolina Standard Course of study.

A teacher survey showed that the majority of staff expressed an interest in becoming more informed of strategies to assist all students in reading more proficiently across the curriculum. Dr. Bruce-Taylor from the Department of Education at UNCC has begun to provide a year long staff development to the staff on content area literacy.

Changes have been  made in the  Exceptional Children’s program to assist students in maximizing their learning potential and enhancing their self-esteem.  Through the inclusion model, EC  students are assigned to regular classes and are taught by the regular classroom teacher and the EC teacher who work collaboratively on their behalves.

A well equipped computer lab has been created to serve as a communications center where teachers and students are required to visit on a weekly basis. The lab serves as a vehicle to enhance our students’ understanding of technology and to reinforce their content via a variety of computer assisted tutorials and learning programs.

We are beginning a literacy project where we will bring in new reading materials to appeal to a variety of readers.  These texts will be used by English classes as well as the Reading Comprehension classes.  To  broaden literature exposure as well as improve basic reading comprehension.

Crossroads is beginning to reexamine each subject area so that there is better alignment and better sequencing.  This will ensure that prerequisite skills are met in sequentially lower level subject areas prior to students enrolling in higher level classes where they will need these skills.  The Standard Course of Study in each subject area will receive greater emphasis as a guide.

There will be more staff development offered regarding teaching strategies.  The goal is to enable each teacher to have at their disposal a variety of teaching strategies for the different learning styles within their classes.

And finally, it a known fact at Crossroads that “We’re Building Character”. Our character development program is our centerpiece. Every leader is an integral part and students are reaping the benefits. A character trait is designated to each month and celebrated accordingly. A school wide assembly is scheduled for the third Wednesday of every month and highlights our efforts to build character in every student who attends Crossroads.
